To celebrate the re-opening of Richmond, Virginia's grand Main Street Station, Pokorny was commissioned to paint the venerable train station. Pokorny had the opportunity to photograph the building details closely from the renovation scaffolding in place around the famous clock tower and elsewhere. The painting focuses on the contrast between the beautiful French Renaissance head house and the utilitarian, but equally elegant, train-shed. A Richmond streetcar is included near the Main Street Station title and it too is illustrated at the same scale relative to the trains and station view. The trains backed into the train shed are led by type 4-4-0 Seaboard Air Line passenger locomotives as built by The Richmond Locomotive works in 1895. All drawings are true scale representations of the buildings, the people,and the various modes of transportation of the time. In the background (framing the head house clock tower) is a larger scale detail view of the clock face and adjacent column with its Corinthian capital. Note the cherub face above the clock. The 1901 date within the piece marks the original completion date of the landmark structure.
