'39 Airflow Design

[ Original 34" x 24" - Multi-Media on Board ]

In the summer of 1939, New York was hosting the World's Fair, the Yankees were on their way to sweeping the Reds in the World Series, and Dorothy and Toto were following the yellow brick road at the movies. That same year, people all over America were taking to the highway. It was also a banner year for industrial design. Here, two noteworthy design efforts along the highway in 1939 are contrasted in front of a Mission style Sinclair gas station. Making a gas delivery is the horizontal teardrop image of the '39 Dodge "Airflow" tanker truck. Standing ready to later dispense its popular product is the '39 Bennet model 371 pump a vertical Art Deco design reaching into the sky and displaying a glass globe with the classic Sinclair H-C logo.
